Welcome!
I hope you’ve been enjoying a peaceful May. After two house moves… I haven’t! So it’s nice to finally get settled in my new home.
I’m excited to bring the Classical Book Club back for June, with a few small but very important changes. Please have a read and let me know what you think!
So what’s changing?
🗣️ A new approach to the discussion
We’re moving away from the one-off, end-of-month discussions which had low turnout even though many of you were reading along.
Instead, we’ll use the Substack Chat for ongoing, flexible conversations throughout each read.
Here’s what that means:
📖 Prompt-based chats focused on characters, chapters, themes, or key scenes.
🔁 Check-ins about your reading progress and impressions.
🕒 No fixed time. Join in when it suits you!
These will be informal and easy to dip in and out of. I'll also continue to post extra background on each novel, plus reminders and highlights to keep the conversation flowing.
📅 A more relaxed timeline
Reading one book per month was proving a bit rigid, especially for longer or more challenging novels. So we’ll loosen the schedule:
Some books will still take about a month
Others may stretch to 6–7 weeks, depending on length and pace
📕 Expanding the theme
We’re still focused on classic, but with a touch more variety.
Alongside older, canonical texts, we’ll start including:
Modern classics
International classics
Literary fiction that echoes or responds to the classics
This way, we can keep things fresh without losing the spirit of this book club.
💬 What do you think?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new format. Does this sound more manageable and engaging for you?
I’ll be in touch soon to choose our next book, suggestions are very welcome!
Thanks for being part of this book club, and I can’t wait to read along with you again.
Take care!
Just joined/ subscribed. Looking forward to it. Just hoping the chat doesn't get lost in the sauce of all the others
I think this will be a good thing - flexible for people's schedules and you can talk about it as you go instead of trying to remember everything for the end. Great idea!
